Adds xmpp.server.validate.host (dynamic, default false). When enabled, an inbound server-to-server stream whose 'to' names a domain this server does not service is refused with a host-unknown stream error. Serviced domains are the XMPP domain, subdomains of it that have a component route, and domains for which trunking is enabled (an exact match against xmpp.gateway.domains; subdomains of a trunked domain are not serviced). A stream without a 'to' is accepted, as dialback peers may omit it.

The stream header sent after STARTTLS is checked as well as the first one, as RFC 6120 section 5.4.3.3 makes the post-TLS header the one that counts. The new check is off by default, so upgrading does not refuse any stream that was accepted before; OF-3421 tracks enabling it by default. Some smaller changes apply regardless of the setting: the Server Dialback check described below, the 'from' of a refused stream's header (see the open question), and two crash fixes (commits 7 and 8). The equivalent post-STARTTLS gap for client connections is OF-3422, in a PR that builds on this one.

Server Dialback's check of the db:result 'to' now uses the same rule (ServerStanzaHandler.isLocallyServiced). This applies regardless of the new setting: its subdomain match is tighter (previously any domain containing the XMPP domain's text, if it had a component route), and a db:result without 'to' is treated as an unknown host instead of throwing a NullPointerException.

Commits, each with its own tests:

  1. Share one rule for the domains that S2S peers may address (used by dialback).
  2. Extract the refusal of a stream into StanzaHandler.refuseStream, with no change in behaviour. The new tests pin the existing response and pass before and after.
  3. Optionally refuse S2S streams that address an unserviced domain.
  4. Validate the S2S stream header that follows STARTTLS.
  5. Refuse a stream for an unknown host from our own domain.
  6. Refuse from our own domain whenever the host is not ours, whatever the error.
  7. Ignore an invalid entry in xmpp.gateway.domains instead of throwing. One bad entry made Trunking.isTrunkingEnabledFor throw, which with validation enabled would break incoming server connections.
  8. Refuse a stream header that declares no content namespace. refuseStream threw a NullPointerException from Namespace.get(null); this also affected the existing invalid-namespace refusal on the first header.
  9. Clear test properties after the new test classes.
  10. Normalise the trunked domains once per configuration change, so that an invalid value is logged once rather than on every check.
  11. Continue Server Dialback with the normalised form of an accepted domain, so that a domain written in another case is not treated as a different one by the duplicate-session check or in the reported result.
  12. Describe host validation in the trunking guide.

Testing: 41 new unit tests. The net, server, session and websocket test packages pass. LocalIncomingServerSessionTest.incomingTest is skipped, as it is disabled on main (OF-3269). I also exercised the change against a two-server federation setup (SASL EXTERNAL and dialback peers, a component subdomain, a trunked domain, and a header changed after STARTTLS), and every case behaved as described above.

Open question: commits 5 and 6 change existing behaviour that this PR makes reachable for S2S. When a stream was refused, the opening header we sent back used the requested domain as its 'from', even when that domain is not one we service, and a header without 'to' got no 'from' at all. RFC 6120 section 4.9.1.3 says that 'from' MUST be an authoritative FQDN for the receiving entity or the empty string, so a refusal now uses our XMPP domain whenever the requested host is missing or not serviced, whatever the error. A serviced host that was requested is still used. This also applies to client connections refused under xmpp.client.validate.host, and to component connections, whose handler treats only the XMPP domain as known. I've kept these as separate commits so they can be dropped or moved to their own ticket if you'd rather.

Walkthrough

The change adds dynamic client and server host-validation properties, disabled by default. Server validation covers initial and post-TLS streams. Shared domain classification recognizes the XMPP domain, component routes, and configured trunking domains. Stream refusal responses use a shared method. Dialback reuses host classification and returns normalized domains. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

Every check of a trunked domain normalised each configured value of
xmpp.gateway.domains again. With an invalid value in the list, that
logged a warning, with a stack trace, for every inbound stream header
and dialback request that reached it (reported by CodeRabbit on igniterealtime#3525).

The normalised domains are now kept until the configuration changes, so
an invalid value is reported once per change, without a stack trace,
and each check is a set lookup. A change to the configuration still
takes effect on the next check, which a new test verifies.

Thanks for this! I've gone over all of the changes.

I've added a number of commits on top of yours, mostly for small things that were quicker to fix directly than to describe:

  • wording in documentation and comments
  • assertion messages in the tests
  • Dutch translations
  • turning xmpp.client.validate.host into a SystemProperty, so that it matches the new server-side property
  • test assertions that also accept an empty 'from' when refusing a stream with a missing or unknown 'to' (RFC 6120 §4.9.1.3 allows it)
  • having ServerDialback#validateRemoteDomain() return the normalised domain, instead of rewriting the element it is given

@viv please have a look at them.

While reviewing, I came across a few problems that are older than this PR but somewhat related to it. I've raised tickets for them:

  • OF-3426: the 'to' of client stream headers is compared case-sensitively when xmpp.client.validate.host is enabled.
  • OF-3427: stream headers that restart a stream (after STARTTLS, SASL or compression) are not namespace-checked.

I suggest leaving OF-3426 and OF-3427 out of scope for this PR.

One thing that I do suggest we change is commit 01cb276 ("OF-2643: Refuse a stream header that declares no content namespace").

I think the commit describes the change differently from what it does. The described headers were already refused; what changes is that the refusal no longer fails, so the stream error actually reaches the peer. The header after STARTTLS isn't namespace-checked at all (OF-3427), so there a header without a content namespace is still accepted when its 'to' is serviced. The tests name a specific setup (an unserviced domain after STARTTLS), which is one trigger among several. We should cover the other triggers too, or at least more than just this one.

I'd like to suggest redoing that commit. I didn't want to rewrite your history, and adding a commit that changes the behaviour of another commit in this PR seemed messy, so I've left it as it is. The problem it fixes isn't specific to host validation: it has been on main since 4.8.0 and affects every connection type. This PR only adds another way to reach it. If we're redoing the commit anyway, we might as well track it in a dedicated ticket and a separate PR, which this PR can then build on. I've raised OF-3425 for it, but feel free to reword that as you see fit.

What changed in this PR

Implements optional host validation for inbound server-to-server connections in Openfire, using a shared serviced-domain rule for stream headers and Server Dialback. Validation is dynamic and disabled by default to preserve existing connection acceptance.

Changes:

  • Validates initial and post-STARTTLS stream headers against the XMPP domain, routed component subdomains, and enabled trunking domains.
  • Hardens stream refusals and trunking configuration handling, and carries normalized domains through dialback processing.
  • Adds regression tests, localized property descriptions, and trunking documentation.

286-311: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert the server name in the post-STARTTLS missing-to test.

testStreamAfterTlsWithoutToIsAccepted checks only the session count and the absence of host-unknown. Its createSession(String serverName, ...) override in the same test class does not record serverName, and it does not call LocalIncomingServerSession.createSession(...). The test still passes if the handler passes a null or wrong server name on this path, or if the real missing-to fallback fails.

Record the serverName argument in that override. Then assert that it equals the local XMPP domain, Fixtures.XMPP_DOMAIN. This covers the handler's argument on the post-TLS path without a real session.

Covering the real fallback in LocalIncomingServerSession.createSession needs a larger fixture. The PR notes that LocalIncomingServerSessionTest.incomingTest is disabled (OF-3269), so treat that coverage as separate work.

@guusdk thanks for the review. On the namespace point (OF-3425): you are right that my commit addressed it narrowly and that the wording was off.

I have redone it broadly on a branch off main. The actual defect is that building the stream that carries a refusal copies the refused header's content namespace; for a header that declares none, that argument is null, so dom4j throws a NullPointerException inside the catch block, and the peer receives no stream error while the connection is left to hang. It has been on main since 4.8.0 (0fc78785, OF-2678) and affects every connection type. The fix answers the error in the handler's namespace, and new tests cover both client and server streams (the full net package stays green).

It is on branch OF-3425 (off main), ready to go up as its own PR for this one to build on. When it does, I will rebase this PR onto it and drop 01cb27659, keeping the host-validation-after-STARTTLS test here since that is the route this PR adds.

viv added a commit to surevine/Openfire that referenced this pull request Oct 29, 2026

Stop dispatch after the connection closes.

NettyConnection.close marks the connection closed before asynchronous cleanup runs. A queued db:result can still reach validateSubsequentDomain. Certificate validation can succeed, after which addValidatedDomain marks the closed session AUTHENTICATED and registers it. The stream is not usable, but the stale registration can block later incoming sessions for the same domain or affect session selection.

Return from NettyConnectionHandler.channelRead0 after the closed-connection check.

@guusdk on CodeRabbit's "stop dispatch after the connection closes" note (NettyConnectionHandler.channelRead0).

I think this is pre-existing and unrelated to the host-validation changes here. It traces to the recent OF-2534 change (6a616cc), which added the isClosed() check. I've seen that commit's message says "skip dispatch if the connection is already closed", but the code only logs and then falls through to process(...), there is no return that would skip dispatch. So CodeRabbit's suggestion lines up with OF-2534's stated intent rather than being new behaviour.

It's separate from OF-2643, though. I can fold it into this, if you like, or raise a ticket to track completing it?

The amount of pain around isClosed was significant, if I recall correctly. I'd prefer addressing any issues separately, so that we can more easily review things as distinct pieces of work, if it comes to revisiting that fix.

I think the rebase dropped the tests that #3527 adds? (in 179e4b8, which now overwrites the StanzaHandlerRefuseStreamTest test file from #3527).

This PR still has a similar test, (testStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefused), but that covers only client streams, not server-to-server ones. It doesn't check the namespace in which the refusal is answered. Maybe drop testStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefused and restore testClientStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefusedWithError and testServerStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefusedWithError from #3527?

@guusdk Good catch, thanks. The rebase had overwritten #3527's StanzaHandlerRefuseStreamTest, and it had also drifted onto an older revision of #3527.

I've re-rebased #3525 onto the current #3527 and restored testClientStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefusedWithError and testServerStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefusedWithError, dropping testStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefused since they cover it (and check the refusal's namespace, which it didn't).

Tested for what this PR adds over OF-3425 (#3527), at head commit 220a4ee5b.

What was tested and is passing

  • Delivered tests: 43 of 43 pass, across the five test classes for this PR.
  • Full xmppserver suite: 2903 run, 0 failures, 0 errors, 3 skipped. The skipped tests are disabled in the codebase and none is in a file this PR changes.
  • End to end: Openfire in Docker with xmpp.server.validate.host and xmpp.client.validate.host enabled. Real client and server-to-server connections negotiated STARTTLS, and the server's response to the stream header was recorded before and after TLS. All six cases behaved as expected. Compared with a build of OF-3425, only the two server-to-server cases changed:
    • a stream that addresses an unserviced domain from the start is now refused before TLS;
    • a stream that addresses the local domain before TLS and an unserviced domain after it is now refused after TLS.
  • Mutation testing: 19 mutations were made to the checks this PR adds or changes, one at a time, with the tests re-run after each. 16 were caught by the expected tests. The three below were not.

Mutations not caught

These are missing tests, not bugs: the code behaves correctly today. Each mutation below is a deliberate change we made to test the tests, and it is not in the PR. The full xmppserver suite still passes with each one in place, so a regression of this kind would go unnoticed.

1. Nothing checks that a dialback session is created for the normalised domain

  • Mutation: in ServerDialback.createIncomingSession(), session.setLocalDomain(localDomain) is changed to session.setLocalDomain(recipient).
  • Behaviour that survives if mutated: the peer addresses the stream to the local domain in a different case (for example EXAMPLE.org). The new session then records that form as its local domain, rather than the normalised one.
  • Why cover it: 9481d3f makes validateRemoteDomain() return the normalised domain so that callers use it. Tests check the value returned, but nothing checks that a caller uses it. No test calls createIncomingSession().
  • Suggested test: drive createIncomingSession() with a dialback result whose to differs in case from the local domain. Assert that the session's getLocalDomain() is the normalised domain.

2. Nothing checks that subsequent-domain dialback answers with the normalised domain

  • Mutation: in LocalIncomingServerSession.validateSubsequentDomain(), the value returned by validateRemoteDomain() is ignored and dbResult.attributeValue("to") is used instead. This is an exact revert of that method's change in 9481d3f.
  • Behaviour that survives if mutated: the <db:result type='valid'> sent back to the peer carries from as the peer wrote it, rather than normalised.
  • Why cover it: this is the second caller changed by 9481d3f, and nothing tests it. No test calls validateSubsequentDomain().
  • Suggested test: call validateSubsequentDomain() with a dialback result whose to differs in case from the local domain. Capture what is delivered on the connection and assert that the reply's from is the normalised domain.

3. Nothing checks that xmpp.client.validate.host defaults to off

  • Mutation: in ClientStanzaHandler, VALIDATE_HOST is built with .setDefaultValue(true) instead of false.
  • Behaviour that survives if mutated: with the property unset, client streams addressed to another domain would be refused with host-unknown. On upgrade, a deployment would change behaviour with no change to its configuration.
  • Why cover it: 71ec0ec replaced getBooleanProperty("xmpp.client.validate.host", false) with a SystemProperty, which moved the default. Every test that touches the property sets it explicitly, so none depends on the default.
  • Suggested test: assert that ClientStanzaHandler.VALIDATE_HOST.getDefaultValue() is false. Alternatively, with the property unset, assert that a client stream addressed to an unknown domain is accepted.

@bobatron Thanks, all three surviving mutants (🐢) are now covered, in d5330883c:

  • ServerDialbackCreateIncomingSessionTest — asserts createIncomingSession() records the normalised domain as the session's local domain (the first direct unit test of that method).
  • LocalIncomingServerSessionSubsequentDomainTest — asserts validateSubsequentDomain() reports success from the normalised domain.
  • StanzaHandlerRefuseStreamTest.testClientHostValidationIsDisabledByDefault — asserts ClientStanzaHandler.VALIDATE_HOST defaults to off.

Each fails against the stated mutation and passes against the current code; no production change. The two dialback tests stub the reader and session factory (modelled on ServerDialbackValidateRemoteDomainTest) rather than going through the socket/TLS harness.

OF-2643: passed test at d5330883c

The three mutations from my earlier review are now caught by the tests added in d5330883c. That commit changes tests only, so production code is unchanged since the code review approval at 220a4ee5b.

  • Delivered tests: 46 of 46 pass, across seven test classes.
  • Mutation testing: all 19 mutations of the checks this PR adds or changes were caught by the expected tests.
  • Full xmppserver suite: 2906 run, 0 failures, 0 errors, 3 skipped. The skipped tests are disabled in the codebase and none is in a file this PR changes.
  • End to end: Openfire in Docker with xmpp.server.validate.host and xmpp.client.validate.host enabled. All six cases behaved as expected. Compared with a build of OF-3425, only the two server-to-server cases that address an unserviced domain changed, and both are now refused with host-unknown.
  • Coverage: adequate as delivered, at unit level.

Approved from a test perspective.

Server Dialback decided whether it services the domain in a db:result
'to' with its own check. That check matched subdomains with
contains(), so any domain that included the XMPP domain's text could
pass if it had a component route, and it threw a NullPointerException
when 'to' was missing.

Stream header validation needs the same decision, so the rule moves to
ServerStanzaHandler.isLocallyServiced: the XMPP domain, a proper
subdomain with a component route, or a domain for which trunking is
enabled (exact match, as before). A db:result without 'to' is now an
unknown host, as XEP-0220 requires the attribute.
The error path of createSession opens a stream that carries the stream
error, delivers it and closes the connection. Validating the stream
header that follows TLS negotiation needs the same response, so that
code moves to a method of its own. Behaviour does not change; the new
tests pin the existing response, which had no coverage, and pass both
before and after the extraction.
ServerStanzaHandler never validated the 'to' of inbound stream
headers, so a peer that authenticated with SASL EXTERNAL was accepted
whatever domain it addressed. The new property
xmpp.server.validate.host enables the host-unknown check that client
connections already have. It is off by default so that upgrades do
not change behaviour; OF-3421 tracks enabling it by default.

A stream without 'to' stays acceptable, as legacy dialback peers omit
it.
viv and others added 19 commits October 30, 2026 18:29
Only the first stream header reached the host check: after STARTTLS,
ServerStanzaHandler.tlsNegotiated re-creates the session directly.
RFC 6120 section 5.4.3.3 requires values from before TLS to be
discarded, which makes the header sent after STARTTLS the one that
counts, and the only one that an active attacker cannot have altered.
When xmpp.server.validate.host is enabled, that header is now checked
in the same way, before the session is re-created.
When a stream header is refused, the stream that carries the error was
opened from the host that the peer addressed. For a host-unknown error
that names a domain this server has just said it does not service, and
when the header had no to attribute the from attribute was omitted.
RFC 6120 section 4.9.1.3 requires an authoritative name for the
receiving entity, or the empty string, in both cases.

The refusal is now opened from the XMPP domain in those cases. Other
refusals still answer from the addressed host, which is serviced. This
applies to client streams refused under xmpp.client.validate.host too.
A refused stream was opened from our own domain only for a host-unknown
error. A stream that names a domain this server does not service, and
that is refused for another reason (such as an invalid namespace while
host validation is disabled), was still opened from that domain.

The refusal is now opened from the XMPP domain whenever the addressed
host is missing or is unknown according to isHostUnknown, whatever the
error, as RFC 6120 section 4.9.1.3 requires. A serviced host that is
addressed is still used. Component streams, whose handler accepts only
the XMPP domain as known, are refused from the XMPP domain too.
Trunking.isTrunkingEnabledFor normalised every value of
xmpp.gateway.domains with JID.domainprep, which throws for a value that
is not a valid domain name. With trunking enabled and one such value in
the list, any check that reached it threw. Server Dialback already used
this method; with xmpp.server.validate.host enabled, the validation of
each inbound stream header now does too, so one bad value would break
incoming server connections instead of refusing them with host-unknown.

An invalid configured value is now logged and ignored, and the other
configured domains are still recognised.
The new test classes set properties such as xmpp.server.validate.host
and the trunking configuration, and clear them before each test, but
left the values of their last test in place for whichever test class
runs next in the same JVM. They now clear them after the class too, as
SaslOutcomeTest and StanzaHandlerTest do.

Also rewords the description of one test that read awkwardly.

The shared rule normalises a domain before deciding whether it is
serviced, so Server Dialback now accepts a db:result whose 'to' names
the XMPP domain in another case, which its old, case-sensitive check
refused. The value was then used as received: the check for an existing
session for the same domain compared it case-sensitively, so a second
session was not recognised as a duplicate, and the result was reported
from the domain as the peer wrote it (reported by CodeRabbit on igniterealtime#3526).

Once the domain is accepted, validateRemoteDomain continues with its
normalised form and records it in the request, which
LocalIncomingServerSession.validateSubsequentDomain reads to report the
result. The permission and certificate checks that precede and follow
it are stubbed in the new tests, as they read the database and the
peer's certificates.
With xmpp.server.validate.host enabled, a trunk refuses inbound
connections for domains it does not service. An administrator who
enables it on a trunk needs to know that the trunked domains are still
accepted, and that their subdomains are not.
The documentation and messages that were added for host validation referred to the domains that are serviced by "this server". In a cluster, several Openfire servers together provide one XMPP service, which makes that phrase ambiguous.

They now refer to the local XMPP service instead. The description of xmpp.server.validate.host explains that term once. No functional change.
Several assertions and Mockito verifications in the tests for host validation carried no message, so a failure did not say what was expected.

Each one now has a message, using a verification mode description for the Mockito verifications. No functional change.
xmpp.client.validate.host was read with JiveGlobals, while its server-to-server counterpart xmpp.server.validate.host is a SystemProperty. The client property was therefore not listed with a description on the system properties page of the admin console, and the two could not be managed in the same way.

It is now ClientStanzaHandler.VALIDATE_HOST, with the same key, default value and dynamic behaviour as before, and with a description in English and Dutch. No functional change.
… host

RFC 6120 §4.9.1.3 allows the stream that refuses a header with a missing or unknown 'to' to be opened from either an authoritative name of the receiving entity or the empty string. The documentation of StanzaHandler#refuseStream() and the tests described the authoritative name as the only option, and the tests asserted the XMPP domain specifically.

The documentation now names both options, and states that the XMPP domain is the authoritative name that is used. The tests accept either value, so that they verify the requirement of the RFC rather than the choice that is made. No functional change.
…t 'to'

The reason given for accepting an S2S stream header without a 'to' attribute was that servers using legacy Server Dialback omit it. That describes pre-XMPP 1.0 peers only, and does not say why accepting such a header does not undermine host validation.

The comment now refers to RFC 6120 §4.7.2, which requires 'to' but asks receiving entities to be liberal towards peers that omit it, and notes that such a stream is treated as addressing the XMPP domain, which is serviced. No functional change.
…ccepted

A stream header without a 'to' attribute is accepted when host validation is enabled. A test verified that for the first stream header, but not for the header that follows TLS negotiation, which is validated on a separate path.

A test now verifies that the latter is accepted too.
…oteDomain()

ServerDialback#validateRemoteDomain() passed the normalised form of the validated domain to its callers by rewriting the 'to' attribute of the db:result element that it was given. createIncomingSession() and LocalIncomingServerSession#validateSubsequentDomain() read that attribute after the call. Nothing in the signature showed this dependency, so a caller that read the attribute before the call would get the value as the peer wrote it.

The method now returns the normalised domain, and both callers use the returned value. The element is no longer modified. No functional change.
Rebasing this branch onto OF-3425 (igniterealtime#3527) re-created StanzaHandlerRefuseStreamTest
from this branch, which overwrote the version added by OF-3425 and dropped its
testClientStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefusedWithError and
testServerStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefusedWithError.

Those two are restored here, covering both client and server streams and checking
the namespace in which the refusal is answered. The narrower testStreamWithoutNamespaceIsRefused,
which covered only client streams and did not check that namespace, is dropped as
they supersede it.
…ation default

Mutation testing of this PR found three behaviours that no test caught,
each a missing test rather than a bug:

- ServerDialback.createIncomingSession() records the normalised domain
returned by validateRemoteDomain() as the session local domain. Only
the return value was tested, not that a caller uses it.
- LocalIncomingServerSession.validateSubsequentDomain() reports success
from that normalised domain; this second caller was untested.
- ClientStanzaHandler.VALIDATE_HOST defaults to off, so upgrading a
deployment that never set xmpp.client.validate.host does not start
refusing client streams. Every test set the property explicitly, so
  none pinned the default.

Each test fails against the corresponding mutation and passes against
the current code.

Every check of a trunked domain normalised each configured value of
xmpp.gateway.domains again. With an invalid value in the list, that
logged a warning, with a stack trace, for every inbound stream header
and dialback request that reached it (reported by CodeRabbit on #3525).

The normalised domains are now kept until the configuration changes, so

takes effect on the next check, which a new test verifies.
