What changed

  • Streaming parser (100 MiB limit). Snapshots are parsed in one pass with defusedxml's iterparse. Each host element is turned into records and dropped, so memory follows the number of explicit records rather than the file size. The limit rises from 10 MiB to 100 MiB. Error priority is unchanged: malformed XML first, then the document checks, then the first invalid host. The in-memory API uses the same parser, and the SHA-256 is computed while reading.
  • Platform honesty. The suite now passes on Windows. Tests that depend on Linux-only behavior (control characters in filenames, POSIX 0600 mode) are skipped there with the reason stated, and path assertions follow the platform. compare_report treats source names as platform-independent labels. .gitattributes checks out text with LF everywhere, and a new Windows CI job runs the tests and a comparison. The README documents the two remaining Windows differences: report privacy depends on folder permissions, and paths use backslashes.
  • Browser inspection and examples. A new inspect_text function returns inspect output for in-memory XML. The page gains an "Inspect one scan" panel and a "Try the synthetic examples" button that loads examples/baseline.xml and examples/after.xml from the site. The context checkbox stays unticked, so the user still confirms before comparing. The page reads files up to the Python size limit, which the runtime exposes.
  • Offline page. A same-origin service worker precaches the site's own files. The build fills in its file list and a cache name hashed from the files, so each deployment replaces the old cache. _headers adds worker-src 'self' and no-cache for sw.js. connect-src 'self' is unchanged.
  • 0.0.2 prep. The version is bumped to 0.0.2. The lockfile is relocked with uv 0.11.14, the version CI uses, so its format revision is unchanged. The changelog gets a 0.0.2 section, docs/release-v0.0.2.md adds a checklist with audit results, and the README install instructions no longer name a version.
  • The inspect pre-flight's last line no longer names the CLI flag --confirm-same-context, so it reads correctly in the browser too.

Why

These are ideas 10–14 from the development list: browser inspection and examples, offline use, platform honesty, a 0.0.2 release, and larger inputs.

Reviewer notes

  • Nothing is published. After merge, publishing follows docs/publishing.md and needs the maintainer's approvals: TestPyPI upload, signed v0.0.2 tag and GitHub Release, then the PyPI upload. The checklist ends with those steps.
  • The wiki still describes 0.0.1 install commands and the 10 MiB limit; it should be updated once 0.0.2 is published.
  • _parse_root was replaced by _parse_bytes/_read_document returning (root without hosts, records, sha256). Snapshot.source is now typed PurePath.
  • The service worker is cache-first for same-origin GET requests only. A new deployment installs a new cache name and deletes old caches on activation.

Verification

  • Linux (WSL), clean checkout with this change applied:
    • 99 tests pass under unittest and pytest; ruff passes.
    • The CI demos pass, and the regenerated report still matches the sample.
    • bash web/build.sh site and node web/smoke.mjs site pass. The smoke test now also checks inspection, the served examples, and that the service worker's file list matches the build.
  • Release audit:
    • Tests pass on Python 3.11, 3.12, and 3.13, and from the extracted source archive.
    • twine check --strict passes for both archives, and the source archive contents were checked.
    • The installed wheel works outside the checkout (inspect, compare, report, verify, history, JSON, refusal, notes preservation).
    • uv pip check passes, and pip-audit reports no known vulnerabilities.
  • Windows 11: 99 tests OK, 3 skipped.
  • Browser (local build): the examples load, compare, and inspect all work. After stopping the server, a reload still loaded the Python runtime from the service worker cache and produced a report.
  • Fuzzing: 20,000 mutated inputs through three entry points raised only ValueError refusals.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added single-scan inspection alongside two-file comparison.
    • Added synthetic example scans and offline browser support after the first visit.
  • Improvements

    • Increased the supported snapshot size from 10 MiB to 100 MiB, with streaming processing for large files.
    • Clarified scan-context requirements and incomplete-scan feedback.
    • Improved cross-platform path handling and added Windows CI coverage.
  • Documentation

    • Updated installation, browser, platform, and version 0.0.2 release guidance.

Parse snapshots in one streaming pass that keeps records instead of
the XML tree, dropping each host element once read, and raise the size
limit from 10 MiB to 100 MiB. Error priority is unchanged, and the
in-memory API uses the same parser.

Make the platform story honest: tests that rely on Linux-only behavior
are skipped on Windows with the reason stated, path checks follow the
platform, in-memory source names are platform-independent labels, text
checks out with LF everywhere, and a Windows CI job runs the suite. The
README documents the remaining Windows differences.

Add inspect_text and an "Inspect one scan" panel to the browser page,
plus a button that loads the synthetic examples from the site while
leaving the context confirmation to the user. A same-origin service
worker, versioned by a hash of the build, keeps the page working
offline; the content security policy still blocks other origins. The
page reads files up to the Python size limit, and the pre-flight's last
line no longer names a CLI flag.

Prepare 0.0.2: bump the version and lockfile, add the 0.0.2 changelog
section and a release-readiness checklist with audit results, and make
the README install instructions version-independent. Publishing still
needs the maintainer's approvals and signed tag.

📝 Walkthrough

The 0.0.2 release adds streaming snapshot parsing and in-memory inspection. The browser page gains single-scan inspection, synthetic examples, and offline caching. The changes also add Windows CI coverage and update release documentation and package metadata.

Changes: Watchpost 0.0.2

Layer / File(s) Summary
Streaming snapshot parsing and inspection
watchpost.py, tests/test_watchpost.py, tests/test_in_memory.py, tests/test_verify.py, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
Snapshot reading and inspection use a shared streaming parser with a 100 MiB limit, incremental record extraction, and input hashing. inspect_text provides in-memory inspection, and tests cover parser behavior and CLI output.
Browser inspection and examples
web/runtime.js, web/app.js, web/index.html, web/style.css, web/smoke.mjs, docs/web.md, README.md
The browser runtime exposes comparison, inspection, and the Python input limit. The page adds single-scan inspection and synthetic examples, with smoke checks for inspection and example files.
Offline browser caching
web/build.sh, web/sw.js, web/_headers, web/smoke.mjs, docs/web.md
The build generates a content-identified service worker precache list. The worker caches same-origin site files, and the smoke test checks the generated file list.
Windows support and release updates
.github/workflows/checks.yml, tests/test_compare.py, tests/test_reporting.py, .gitattributes, pyproject.toml, MANIFEST.in, CHANGELOG.md, README.md, docs/release-v0.0.2.md
CI adds a Windows job, and tests and documentation account for platform-specific paths and report permissions. The package version changes to 0.0.2, with release materials and LF text normalization added.

Processing remains local, and package-publication permissions are unchanged. Offline caching introduces a rollback limitation: previously installed browser code can survive a server-side revert. Live release-approval settings could not be confirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new cache-first service worker can continue serving the installed application after deployment is reverted to the workerless base. Removing sw.js and restoring the old page does not provide an explicit retirement path for existing registrations. This weakens rollback as a way to withdraw browser code, including during security recovery.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Malicious XML must reach the local file or in-memory ingestion path and is processed in the caller's process or browser tab. The new persistent execution scope is the browser application's origin and previously controlled clients, not a newly exposed multi-tenant parsing service.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The browser separates selected scan bytes from static asset requests. Its policy restricts connections to the same origin, and the service worker neither receives selected File bytes through this flow nor dynamically stores fetched responses.
  • observed — Publication validates repository, registry, version-derived ref, package name, and main ancestry before building. Only the publish job receives OIDC authority, and it verifies the downloaded artifact checksums without rebuilding. These controls and the publishing policy predate this PR. Required reviewers, deployment restrictions, trusted-publisher records, and actual approvals remain external, unverified controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The no-cache rule supports checking for a replacement worker, but it is not a worker-retirement mechanism. Reverting to a deployment without a valid replacement worker can leave cached application code controlling existing clients. The supplied smoke test checks runtime results and generated manifest contents, not this rollback transition.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a worker-retirement procedure that survives rollback to a pre-worker build. Include ownership-scoped cache cleanup and browser checks covering existing controlled clients, failed installation, forward updates, and retirement.
  • proposed — Before publication, confirm the live environment protection rules and registry trusted-publisher records against the documented repository, workflow, environment, reviewer, and ref requirements. Preserve the actual approval and registry verification results separately from release instructions.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The report size message still says 10 MiB, but the limit is now 100 MiB.

This check compares against MAX_XML_BYTES, which this PR raised from 10 MiB to 100 MiB. verify_report therefore accepts reports up to 100 MiB. When it rejects one, it still reports a 10 MiB limit. The wrong figure misleads users, and the effective report limit changed without being stated.

Either derive the message from the constant or give reports their own limit. Because _read_bytes reads up to MAX_XML_BYTES + 1, a separate report limit also needs a parameter on _read_bytes.

🐛 Minimal fix for the message
- raise ValueError("Report exceeds the 10 MiB limit. Use a report saved by compare.")
+ raise ValueError(

The streaming parser removed each finished root child with
root.remove(), which searches every kept scaninfo and runstats element
first. A file with many kept elements followed by many others parsed in
quadratic time: 20,000 of each took 2.7 s. Collect the kept elements
separately and empty the root after each child instead; the same file
now takes 0.07 s. A regression test parses 50,000 of each.

The release checklist said Watchpost makes no runtime network calls,
but the browser page loads its own files. Say that the CLI makes no
network calls and describe the browser separately, and record the
updated test counts.

verify_report rejects reports over MAX_XML_BYTES, which this branch
raised to 100 MiB, but its message still said 10 MiB. Build the message
from MAX_XML_MIB and test the refusal with an oversized report.
