Summary

  • add a dedicated npmscan workflow for pull requests that touch workspace package.json files, pnpm-lock.yaml, or pnpm-workspace.yaml
  • start in mode: warn so the team can review the signal without changing merge behavior
  • pin the action to the current v1.3.0 commit and keep fail-on-error: false so scanner availability does not block merges

Why

This adds PR-time dependency diff review with extra supply-chain checks around new install scripts, lockfile source changes, changed overrides/resolutions, and malware advisories that do not usually appear in standard vulnerability audits.

Test plan

  • Open a PR that changes pnpm-lock.yaml or a workspace package.json
  • Confirm the npmscan workflow runs
  • Confirm findings are reported in warn mode without failing the PR
  • Confirm unrelated PRs do not trigger the workflow

Summary by cubic

Adds an npmscan workflow that runs on pull requests touching package.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, or pnpm-workspace.yaml, adding supply-chain checks for new install scripts, lockfile source changes, changed overrides/resolutions, and malware advisories that standard vulnerability audits miss.

Runs in warn mode with fail-on-error: false so findings are reported without blocking merges; the action is pinned to v1.3.0. Unrelated PRs do not trigger the workflow.

Written for commit 0ae0925. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Pull requests that update package manifests or workspace and lockfile configuration are now automatically checked for known package vulnerabilities.
    • Scan results are reported as warnings, and scan errors do not prevent the pull request workflow from completing.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a GitHub Actions workflow that runs NPMscan on pnpm-lock.yaml for pull requests that change package manifests or pnpm dependency files.

Changes

Pull request dependency scanning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure the dependency scan
.github/workflows/npmscan.yml
Adds a pull-request workflow triggered by changes to package manifests, pnpm-lock.yaml, or pnpm-workspace.yaml. It checks out the repository and runs the pinned NPMscan action in warning mode with action errors set not to fail the workflow. The workflow grants contents read access and pull requests write access.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0ae09

The new dependency scan can silently skip pull requests that change only a package.json, such as one adding an install script. Nothing breaks, but the scan would not cover the manifest changes it was meant to check. Consider adding the manifests to the scanned files before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Scan changed manifests as well as the lockfile.

If a PR changes only a workspace package.json, this job starts, but NPMscan skips the unchanged pnpm-lock.yaml. The PR receives no scan of its manifest changes, including new root install scripts. Pass the relevant manifests through the action’s files input, or add a manifest scan for matching PRs. The pinned action supports multiple files and skips unchanged files.
