AutoRunner._train_algo_in_nni() built the NNI trialCommand by concatenating the algo object path and work_dir into one string. NNI's local training service runs trialCommand through the platform shell (bash on Linux and macOS, cmd.exe on Windows), so a path containing spaces or shell metacharacters was not passed through as written.
This PR:
adds _nni_trial_command(), which builds the command from an argument list and quotes each path for the shell NNI uses: POSIX quoting on Linux and macOS, and on Windows double quotes for cmd.exe (with trailing backslashes doubled), rejecting the characters cmd.exe interprets even inside quotes (", %, !, line breaks, NUL). Each path reaches NNIGen run_algo as one literal argument;
quotes the object path in the trialCommand hint printed by NNIGen.print_bundle_algo_instruction().
The command is unchanged for ordinary paths.
Tests
New tests/auto3dseg/test_nni_trial_command.py. It checks that plain paths give the same command as before, that paths containing spaces, ;, $(), backticks, quotes, | and & split back into the original arguments, and it runs the generated command through the real platform shell (subprocess.run(..., shell=True): /bin/sh on POSIX, cmd.exe on Windows CI) to check the program receives the literal paths and nothing else runs.
Types of changes
Non-breaking change (fix or new feature that would not break existing functionality).
Build the AutoRunner NNI trialCommand from an argument list joined with
shell quoting, so the algo object path and work_dir are always passed
as single literal arguments. Quote the path in the NNIGen trialCommand
hint as well.

AutoRunner now uses a shared helper to build NNI trial commands. The helper quotes the object filename and working directory for the platform shell. On Windows, it rejects arguments containing characters it cannot safely quote. The printed local trial command also quotes the serialized object filename. Tests cover command formatting and argument delivery on POSIX and Windows.
Windows trials may receive altered paths. Confirm the shell used by NNI’s local launcher and align the quoting and test with it before merging.

NNI runs trialCommand with PowerShell on Windows, so quote each path as
a PowerShell single-quoted literal there instead of using list2cmdline.
Move the helpers to hpo_gen so the NNIGen hint uses the same quoting.

Pass the NNI configuration filename as one argument.
If self.work_dir contains a space, cmd.split() separates nni_config_filename into multiple arguments. nnictl create then cannot load the configuration, so NNI never receives the quoted trialCommand. Pass an argument list directly to run_cmd. Update the dry-run command to quote the filename too. As per path instructions, “Review the Python code for quality and correctness.”

Hi @garciadias I think your fix will work but I would have to try these a little more thoroughly on my system. I do think that your tests are gated incorrectly because your assumptions about what which does.
NNI's local training service runs trialCommand through cmd.exe on
Windows (via spawn with shell=True, or cmd.exe /c from its PowerShell run
script), so wrap each path in double quotes there, double trailing
backslashes, and reject characters cmd.exe interprets inside quotes.
Select the platform with sys.platform. Test through the real platform
shell with subprocess(shell=True) and use skip_if_windows.

@ericspod You're right, and it's more than a gap in the tests. I checked the NNI 3.0 sources, and on Windows the trial command never goes to PowerShell directly:
nni_node/common/trial_keeper/process.js (training service v3 / trial keeper) uses child_process.spawn(command, {shell: true}), which is cmd.exe /d /s /c on Windows;
nni_node/training_service/local/localTrainingService.js (v1 local) writes a PowerShell run script, but the trial command itself runs inside it as cmd.exe /c <trialCommand>;
nni/tools/trial_tool/trial.py and trial_keeper.py use Popen(trial_command, shell=True), which is also cmd.exe.
The NNI docs say PowerShell, but every path ends at cmd.exe, so the PowerShell single-quoting I'd added was wrong for Windows. c818ed5 replaces it with cmd.exe quoting:
On Windows each path is wrapped in double quotes, which make & | < > ^ ( ) literal, and trailing backslashes are doubled so the program receives the path unchanged.
Characters that cmd.exe still interprets inside double quotes (", %, !, line breaks, NUL) are rejected with a ValueError. " can't appear in a Windows path anyway; % and ! can, but there is no reliable way to escape them for cmd /c.
The tests run the generated command through the real platform shell with subprocess.run(..., shell=True), swapping python for a script that prints its argv: /bin/sh on POSIX (with skip_if_windows), and cmd.exe in a new Windows-only test that includes & and | payloads.
The Windows test only runs on the Windows CI jobs. I couldn't run cmd.exe locally. I also haven't been able to test the extra PowerShell → cmd.exe /c layer in NNI's v1 local service, since that quoting is NNI's own.

It's worth noting how to actually detect the shell using check_output:
check_output("echo $0",shell=True) returns the path to the running shell program under sh/bash/zsh/etc.
check_output("echo $0",shell=True) returns b'$0\r\n' under cmd and nothing under Powershell (I think).
check_output("Get-Process",shell=True) returns process information under Powershell but raises an exception under cmd.
These rely on built-in components of the shells rather than external programs whose paths can change. Under Windows it seems Powershell isn't ever used through subprocess actually so the last check isn't ever needed, you really only need to check echo $0 returns a path to an existing file to know you're on a POSIX shell.
For security reasons, do we need to worry about someone manipulating the PATH variable? It would be safer to hard code which executable is used, and ensure it is the one called rather than a different Python, but I can't say if it's necessary.

Do we need to consider what would be in the environment dictionary when calling anything in subprocess? Is there an attack vector where the environment is manipulated to gain access that hasn't already been acquired? With sys.executable that's very hard here, and also a test in an assumed safe testing environment.
